Officer Elections Oct 23 at 7PM

We will be having elections for officers at our regular monthly meeting on October 23rd at Round Table Pizza in downtown Sunnyvale. This is a great way to get involved, have fun, meet some nice, dedicated, like-minded people. We will be looking for people to fulfill positions found on our contacts page. We will also be reviewing and discussing what goals and objectives we need to set in order to best fulfill our mission which roughly is to lead the participation of mountain cyclists in the trails community.

In addition, prior to the meeting, the board of directors will be having a closed session to review our mission and to appoint new board members as necessary. If you are interested in serving on ROMP’s board, please send your application to president@romp.org no later than Monday at 12:00PM

Support BART, support multi-use trails Oct 7

We are organizing a multi user event on the peninsula in cooperation and support of the Bay Are Ridge Trail Council. BART has been a driving for force for multi use trails, and is very worthy of our support. I’d like to get at least 30 people to come down and register. Guided rides will begin at 10:00.
This will be a ride of various lengths with rest stops and food and fun!. I know $30 sounds like a lot for a ride in a place you could go to for free, but this is to raise awareness and funds for the ridge trail. Please join us. Coming to this event will be a form of advocacy.

Need a place to stay? Camp at Portola Redwoods State Park: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=539

DEFEND MOUNTAIN BIKING: SUPPORT THE IMBA LEGAL FUND!

Dear Josh,

Can you believe mountain biking is still attacked as an illegitimate use of trails? First, we were accused of speeding erosion. Then, we were labeled a “dangerous menace.” IMBA is dispelling these false allegations and reopening trails — but a new danger looms. Liability concerns now pose a significant threat to our sport. That’s why I’m asking you to please donate to IMBA’s Legal Fund today. Contributors of $35 or more will receive the hardcover chronology, “Stumpjumper: 25 Years of Mountain Biking” signed by Ned Overend.

Donate to IMBA’s Legal Fund: http://go.imba.com/site/R?i=7jcUhFE7j567hWaG-NApCA.

More than 500 mountain bikers have already put their money where their passion is and contributed over $33,000 to IMBA’s Legal Fund. Your fellow riders are counting on you to chip in and make a donation of your own.

Our goal is simple: Use the clarity of the law and the power of IMBA’s 35,000 members to defend mountain bikers’ rights. The Legal Fund helps support three crucial areas of IMBA’s work:

* Spearhead the development of risk management resources
* Defend against daily attacks on local trail systems
* Influence legislation that determines access for mountain bikers

Please donate now: http://go.imba.com/site/R?i=LUSBEHzy0gzKm-eflA6wRg.

Read more about the Lgal Fund: http://go.imba.com/site/R?i=CXjrOOMHjTHRQehBFQoYVA.

As I write this letter, National Forests in Montana, Idaho, Colorado, West Virginia, North Dakota and California are considering banning bikes from hundreds of miles of great riding. Your contribution will help ensure that IMBA’s rapid response team is ready to act with an effective action alert when disaster strikes near Campbell.

Your donation to IMBA’s Legal Fund will help expand and improve our role as mountain biking’s guardian. We’re confident you’ll feel your tax-deductible donation is a savvy investment in the future of our sport, please contribute today: http://go.imba.com/site/R?i=U1JXbz61ZPPcxBRBykks-A.

Thanks for your continuing generosity,

Trail Worker Party summary

Sept.19th’s Trail Worker Party at the Sports Basement was good. 21 people showed up. Most of us were the usual suspects, however we did recruit a new club member. Also Cathy Moyer, ED of Volunteers for Outdoor California http://www.v-o-cal.org/, took the opportunity introduce us to her trailwork program.
I showed a6 minutevideo compilation composed of shots taken during Coe trailwork days last year. ROMP President Josh Moore delivered a power point presentation that encapsulated what ROMP is doing, and listed most of the advocacy and traiworkopportunities (suggestion: This could be posted on our website). Patty Ciesla delivered an overview on what’s happening up at the Soquel State Demonstration Forest. It seemed implicit to me that the volunteer managment of Redwoods Bridge Project would be managed for our advocacy groups (NorCAMBA, ROMP, Stewards of SDF) by v-o-cal. There’s no date given for this project.

We did get to hang around and party and browse the store as well.

I did get some useful feedback and suggestions to use for the next trail work season. I was also able to articulate and test some ideas in front of the group.

Communicaton: We will start using Evites for trail days. This way the invitees list can grow organically, folks can see who is coming, and information for car-pooling can be shared. This will augment other channls of communication.

Car-pooling: We will use the Evites and other means to facilitate this, and will always encourage car-pooling. Up front, time committments for groups must be acknowledged, and riding groups vs. pure trailwork groups should try to associate into shared rides resectively (did that make sense?).

New T-shirt: The trail workers want ROMP to make them a new T-shirt. One of the most important functions of this is to let other trail users know who is doing the trailwork and how to find out more about us. I was wondering if we could use Berry Stevens tag-line of “Build’em and Ride them” on the shirt. Motion to be made at next ROMP meeting.

Funding: There is concensus the trailworkers want to see coffee and food at the meet in the morning. I will make a motion at the next meeting for a small allowance.

New places to do trailwork: Volunteers can come forward and lead otherprojects, and ore leaders are always needed. Brushing in Grant Ranch will be happening.

Nominations for land manager recogntion throughawards, next ROMP meeting.

There’s more, but I have to go now.

REI awards ROMP a Conservation and Recreation Grant

Recreational Equipment Incorporated (REI) awarded ROMP a conservation and recreation grant to develop trails in the northwest corner of Soquel State Demo Forest. The Redwoods Bridge and Trails Project is a trail work and bridge construction effort in a California Department of Forestry Demonstration Forest which will protect the environment and provide educational and recreational opportunities to residents in Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties.

We have also received an additional grant from IMBA / CLIF!

Approximately ten years ago, California Department of Forestry (CDF) developed a trails plan for SDSF that included a trail loop consisting of Long Ridge Road, Hinh’s Mill Road, Amaya Creek Road, and a bridge over Amaya Creek to connect Amaya Creek Road and Long Ridge Road (see attached map). The bridge and connecting trail has not been built despite significant interest in the project due to budget shortfalls within CDF. An REI grant provides a great opportunity for REI stores, members and employees to join together with volunteers from ROMP, trailworkers.com, Norcal High School League and The Stewards of Soquel Forest to complete a four mile loop trail that accesses 900 acres of riparian and redwood ecosystems.

We are going to build a functional, certified safe bridge over Amaya Creek, and connecting trail from Long Ridge and Amaya Creek Roads. We expect 100 volunteers to donate 600 hours over four days to complete the project. The project will create a recreational loop trail through riparian and redwood climates, while protecting endangered steelhead trout spawning habitat. We hope the trail work will take place before the end of this year. Look for postings and come out and help make this event a great success.

The Tour de Peninsula

The Tour de Peninsula (TdP) bike ride will take place Sunday, August 6. “The Tour is owned and benefits the San Mateo County Parks & Recreation Foundation, a nonprofit that undertakes special projects to benefit San Mateo County’s (SMC) parks system and its users.” TdP Site

While everyone is welcome in SMC parks, the parks system continues to prohibit cycling off pavement. It is hypocritical to use cycling to benefit parks that cyclists only get to enjoy a very small fraction of.

Huddart and Wunderlich County Parks boast some of the Peninsula’s most beautiful and undisturbed Redwoods and Riparian habitats. The deep shade and numerous creeks provide a nature experience that is unsurpassed on the Peninsula. These resources must be protected, maintained and enjoyed.

I am passionate about cycling – on road and off. I believe SMC will some day recognize the health and community benefits of cycling for transportation and recreation. However, the TdP sells mountain bikers short. Mountain biking on dirt is banned by SMC ordinance. If permitted, mountain bikers would represent the single largest trail users group in county parks and would provide much needed revenue and volunteer trail maintenance. SMC Parks and Recreation is out of touch with the recreational desires of the residents of the county. TdP should work to change the ordinance if it is going to continue to profit from cyclists. Mountain biking should not be a crime.

Please enjoy the Tour. Bring your friends and family and help support the parks.

Josh Moore
President
